Design Spotlight: Behind the Scenes of Our Most Loved 80s-Inspired Shirt
Neon lights. Boombox beats. Arcade nights. The 1980s was more than a decade—it was a vibe, a movement, a full-on explosion of color, sound, and style. And when we set out to design what would become one of our most loved 80s-inspired shirts, we knew we had to channel all of it.
This isn’t just a T-shirt—it’s a time machine in cotton form. A piece of wearable nostalgia that screams synthwave, Saturday morning cartoons, and unapologetic self-expression.
Today, we're pulling back the curtain to show you how this fan-favorite shirt came to life—from the first sketch to the final stitch.
It All Started with a Feeling
Every great design begins with a spark—and for this shirt, it was the sudden rush of memory from hearing Take On Me blasting through a retro playlist.
We asked ourselves:
What made the 80s so unforgettable?
What symbols instantly transport you to that neon-soaked decade?
Our answer? Arcade pixels. Sunset gradients. Cassette tapes. VHS fuzz. We didn’t want to just design something inspired by the 80s—we wanted to capture the era's soul.
The Design Process: Building the Vibe
Our design team dove deep into the archives—both real and digital. Think:
- Vintage comic book panels
- Retro Pepsi ads
- Miami Vice color palettes
- VHS tape covers
- Synthwave art and 8-bit graphics
We moodboarded like maniacs. There were neon pinks and electric blues, checkerboard floors, lightning bolts, and gridlines flying across every surface.
Then came the concept:
A bold central graphic featuring a pixelated boombox mid-explosion, with chromatic text reading “Feel the Frequency” in glitch-style font.
We wanted movement. We wanted attitude. We wanted that feeling of being 14 in your room, blasting a cassette, and believing the world was yours.
Sketch to Screen: Bringing It to Life
We started with a hand-drawn illustration of the boombox, inspired by real models from the 80s (shoutout to the Sharp GF-777). We exaggerated the proportions—larger speakers, a floating tape deck, knobs that looked like candy.
Once digitized, the artwork was layered with:
- Neon gradients for that classic "sunset over the grid" look
- Chromatic distortion effects to give it a glitchy VHS feel
- Halftone textures that mimic retro printing techniques
We added a digital overlay of pixel “cracks,” as if the design was bursting out of an old CRT screen.
The final design? Pure retro energy.
Choosing the Shirt: Fit, Feel, and Fabric
Great graphics mean nothing if they’re printed on a shirt that feels like cardboard. That’s why we spent serious time selecting the perfect tee.
We chose:
- A pre-washed, garment-dyed cotton tee with a slightly worn-in feel
- Unisex relaxed fit that flatters all body types
- Vintage black and faded navy color options to make the neon pop
- Screen printing with soft ink that feels like part of the fabric (no plastic feel here)
The result? A shirt that looks like you found it in the back of an old record shop, but fits like your favorite go-to tee.
The Reaction: Why You Love It So Much
Since launching the shirt, the love has been unreal. Here’s what people are saying:
“This shirt looks like it came straight out of a Stranger Things episode. Obsessed.”
“It reminds me of my dad’s old concert tees. The quality is INSANE.”
“I wore it to an 80s party and had strangers asking where to get one.”
It's become a bestseller, a community favorite, and the shirt people reach for again and again. Some have even bought two—just in case the first one ever wears out.
Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed
Yep, we slipped in a few nods for the real retro lovers. 👀
- The glitch text features a hidden Morse code line—if you decode it, it reads: “STAY RAD”
- The boombox’s digital display is set to 8:08—a tribute to the Roland TR-808 drum machine, a staple of 80s music
- The background grid fades into a pixelated skyline inspired by Miami Vice’s opening sequence
We believe design is in the details—and those little touches are our love letter to the 80s.

Why We’ll Always Love the 80s
The 80s was a decade of boldness. It celebrated weirdness. It broke rules. And most importantly, it had fun. That’s what we aim to capture in every thread of this shirt.
Whether you lived through it or are just discovering it now, one thing’s for sure:
Retro never gets old.
